Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cryosurgery, also known as cryoablation, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy cancerous prostate tissue. Guided by ultrasound or MRI, small probes are inserted into the prostate to freeze targeted areas, effectively killing cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This approach is particularly beneficial for patients seeking alternatives to traditional surgery or radiation, as it aims to minimize damage to nerves and structures responsible for urinary continence and sexual function.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that focal cryotherapy offers oncological outcomes comparable to more invasive treatments. For instance, a study reported a 10-year metastasis-free survival rate of 93.9% and overall survival of 97% in patients undergoing focal cryotherapy . Moreover, the procedure has been associated with high rates of preservation of urinary and sexual function; approximately 90% of men returned to their baseline urinary and sexual function post-treatment . These findings suggest that cryosurgery is a safe and effective option for prostate cancer treatment, offering a balance between cancer control and quality of life preservation.
